Woodturning Workshops.

Anyone can learn how to use a wood lathe and discover the limitless creativity you can experience with a new take on this age-old craft.

I am offering half-day wood turning workshops in my home studio in Margaret River beginning in January 2024. The courses run from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. There is a course that is perfect for you as I have prepared a program to suit all levels of experience from the complete novice to anyone who wants to brush up on their previously learned skills. If you have a group with special needs or scheduling constraints, we will try and accommodate your needs.

You will be using high quality Australian-made Vicmarc variable speed lathes. Protective clothing and PPE supplied. All course materials and finishes supplied. Specialist wood from my private collection is also available to purchase for your special project.

Beginners Course.

This course is for people who are interested in starting the basics of wood turning or even those who remember that pleasurable experience back in high school.

Areas covered in this fundamental module are:

  • Workshop/Lathe safety.

  • Getting to know the lathe.

  • Turning tools and what they do.

  • Basic sharpening.

  • Hands on practice - you will leave with not only a rewarding experience but also at least one honey dipper and a one small bowl.

Intermediate Course.

This course is aimed at participants with some experience or have completed the beginners module.

Areas covered in this module are:

  • Grain orientation.

  • Design and form of a bowl.

  • Methods of mounting the bowl blank on the lathe.

  • Hollowing the bowl.

  • Finishing the foot of the bowl.

  • Sanding and finishing to a professional standard.

Advanced Course.

This course is aimed at the experienced turner who wants to consolidate and progress their skills to new areas of turning. Participants can choose from a variety of turning processes listed below.

Processes offered in thus module are:

  • Hollow Forms.

  • Turned-cut-rejoined forms.

  • Green turning and how to dry the wood.

  • Lidded containers

  • Back chucking.
